Fatal Formula 1 championship crashes - Road Warriors that Perished Trying.

Many road warriors perished trying to win the most ultimate of prestige in Formula 1. It is in all human nature to try and attain good things. We test ourselves in many fields of endeavour. It could be medicine or exploration - the adventures are endless. Many men can't help but pursue the idea of speed where they can push to the limit and briefly reach the zone - a world where one is running parallel with death. What makes us do it? What excites us?

I can see the attraction but lack the courage of such conviction. Perhaps I'm right to? However, I can't help admiring the Formula 1 racing or the Isle of Man TT because it is so dangerous.

It must be intoxicating once you've done such things. What motivates these men when the more they dice with death, the greater the risk of meeting it became so?

Lewis Hamilton's 2014 Spanish Grand Prix Win

I have just finished watching the Spanish Grand Prix and having seen an exciting duel between Lewis Hamilton and team mate Nico Rosburg. This race was 66 laps and Lewis Hamilton won by around 2/10 of a second. It put him three point clear of the Grand Prix championship over all. 

Lewis Hamilton is on 100 point while Nico Rosburg is on 97 points. Hamilton has had a string of wins to put him in such a position after not completing the Australian Grand Prix at the beggining of the 2014 season. He had to retire in the early stages of the race in Australia. With a string of succesive wins since then, he has been able to move into a marginal lead as of today 11/05/14. However, the next race is Monaco and team mate Nico Rosburg will be hoping to perform as well as he did last year at Monaco.

Driving Jim Clark's Lotus 25 would be a dream come true for anyone who enjoys formula one and its high octane, fuel injected, excitingly dangerous history. Where the thin line between winning glory and devastating acceleration into the afterlife can happen in the flicker of a blink.

 

Jim Clark tasted both sides - the euphoric adulation of winning while skimming the danger of death and finally the flip side of the formula one coin. His name now echoes in eternity and the thought of driving one of his actual cars is something close to the legend he has become. I would be too terrified to even contemplate racing in formula one, but to take one on a spin on an empty open track? Oh yes! I think I could manage that.

 

David Coulthard got to do just that, but then he is one of the many who have tweaked the nose of Formula one danger. I have a Lotus 25 diecast 1:18 of Jim Clark's 1967 Dutch Grand Prix car. It has pride of place in my little office room. I enjoy watching Formula One, but I get this interest in fads. I am going through such a fad of interest at the moment. It will settle down, but its Ron Howard, the late James Hunt and Nikki Lauda's fault.

For now, I'm enjoying going through a retro buzz  and the great Retro Brit names of the 50s and 60s are compelling me to look at the sport. Jim Clark, Mike Hawthorn, Peter Collins, Graham Hill, John Surtees and Jackie Stewart. That fifteen years was a golden age for British Formula One. Great days with only some of the vehicles of some of the ghosts that have left us.
