I watched the drama of Eric Morecambe and Ernie's Wise in their early days as they struggled to achieve their popularity. It was a joy to watch and one of the best programmes over the New Year. Victoria Wood was an absolute treat as she played Eric's driven mother - determined to push her son and find his vocation in life - doing the one thing she knew he was good at. Playing they fool and making people laugh.
Comedian, Vic Reeves, plays Eric's dad and there is the wonderful suggestion that Eric gets his humor more from his father, but his mother remains the driving force behind him and the unappreciative young Eric is forced to do dancing classes and entered into stage competitions - many of which, he wins.
Then comes the chance meeting with young Ernie Wise and at Eric's mother's encouragement; the two young lads form a double act. The story is wonderfully told and the audience follows them through the trials and tribulations of their early years. Victoria Wood as the close monitoring mother is fantastic and the story is as much a tribute to Eric's mother as it is to the great comedy duo that the Retro Brit nation came to love and still does to this day.
