I have just watched a peach of a Woody Allen movie. It was very comical and charming all mixed into a big ball of eyeball fun.
The thing I like about Woody Allen, (and I don't mean to be rude) is the fact that he looks so drippy and incapable. Yet some how he always manages to shine through as a loser who drips charm and glitter upon those around him.
Mighty Aphrodite is a film were Woody is married and while on a dinner evening with friends, both he and his wife decide to adopt a baby. There is one going spare at the adoption clinic and pow! They end up with a baby son. Skip forward about five or six years and the little lad is growing up and bringing joy to his adoptive father, Woody Allen.
Then Woody gets this urge to find out who the boys biological mother is. After a little bit of detective work he tracks down the biological mother who is a zany hooker played by Mira Sorvino. A lady who is gorgeous but incredibly flawed with dreams of stardom that have no chance of coming her way except in porn movies.
Woody wants to rescue her from this life but will not let her know he has adopted her real son. He is a poor excuse for a gallant knight in modern day New York, but never the less, he seems determined to be one. The consequence of which are at times, hilarious and charming. There is a wonderful ironic twist to the tale and it gets a 10 out 10 from me. Great fun stuff, and in my humble opinion; one of Woody's best. That is high praise among his many great films.
