U.K. Sheep Dog Herding Competition

My Dad and I used to enjoy the Sunday afternoon televised sheep dog trials. The programs bought various shepherds from all over the United Kingdom and we would watch the abilities of dog and shepherd herding sheep over prepared obstacle terrain.

It seemed a little cheesy at first, but once you started to watch; one became compelled by the skill and careful coordination needed between dog and shepherd while herding a group of sheep across the course. After a while, anyone was sucked in by the ability of these people.

Being a city and town person, I soon developed a healthy admiration for the skill of the country folks who farm our lands from John O Groats in the extreme north of Scotland, to Lands End in the extreme south east of England. I have chosen a few clips from television off of YouTube. Hope you enjoy...

Each week the viewer was taken all over the British Isles to see various categories of sheep dog trials, including junior handlers.

Below is a Scottish shepherd with several of his dogs - all pristine and ready to heard. The skill and training must be immense and one would suppose these shepherds get great gratification from their dogs and profession.
